WHO Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative

Thanks to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a worldwide program, the WHO Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative was initiated in 1991 to help promote and support breastfeeding all starting from within hospitals and birthing centers. It was created to help mothers leave hospitals equipped with knowledge and material necessary to aid them in having a successful breastfeeding experience at home. Hospitals and birthing centers that apply the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes are recognized for encouraging proper feeding care for mothers and infants.

The WHO Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative includes training for maternity hospital employees and audit processes, among many other tools designed to endorse appropriate feeding techniques which further advances the bond between mother and child. It is an all around amazing program that not only facilitates team work within hospital staff, but also has an end result that promotes a solid relationship between mother and baby. As a mother, you know more than anyone that breastfeeding is a huge factor in helping you grow closer to your little one.
