Find the right size breast shield

All breast pumps come with the standard size 24mm breast shields, but every mother is built differently, so you may or may not need another size breast shield. Most breast pump brands, such as Medela for example, offer breast shield sizes coming in 21mm, 24mm, 27mm, 30mm, and 36mm.

If your nipples are rubbing the sides of the shields while pumping to where it is hurting or if you notice any redness, you may want to consider trying another size shield. Keep in mind it is not unusual for you to need a different size breast shield on each breast.

Tools to help you fit your breast shield

Also, be sure to ask for advice from your doctor, midwife, or lactation consultant, as they can be very resourceful for things like this.
