If you haven’t figured it out yet, babies are EXPENSIVE!  When my son was born I wondered how someone so small could need so much stuff.  When packing for a weekend trip, our car was so full it looked like we were moving.  My husband and I were constantly looking for ways to stretch our dollar and here are 3 easy ways to save money after baby’s birth.

  1. Breastfeed

The benefits of breastfeeding are lifelong. Breastfeeding benefits the baby with continued disease resistance, less likely to suffer from SIDS, and enhanced cognitive development. Breastfeeding benefits the mom too. Data indicates breastfeeding is a preventative for osteoporosis development and breast cancer.

Many mothers also find breastfeeding to be more econimcally sound. Formula may be one the biggest expenses for a newborn costing upwards of $150 per month.

As a show of support for breastfeeding,  the Affordable Care Act requires most commercial insurance plans to cover breastfeeding supplies, support and services, meaning new moms can get a breastpump free of charge through their insurance.

  1. Clothes

Babies grow so fast that you don’t need to fill their closet with one size clothes.  When you register or if people are asking what sizes of clothes to get, think ahead to months down the road and ask for larger sizes.  I have also found re-sale shops and clothing swap opportunities in our community are a great money saving option.

  1.  Diapers

The price for diapers can range widely based on brand and where you purchase.  If you choose to use disposable diapers try a few brands until you find a diaper that works best for your baby.  Once you have determined the brand you like sign up for coupons on the manufacturer’s web site and watch for sales, then stock up.  Another way to save is to use cloth diapers and wash them yourself.
