Because of the Affordable Care Act, health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support for mothers. However, even though insurance companies are required to provide breastfeeding support, one thing to consider is that each provider may offer different amounts of coverage.

Even though the degree of coverage may vary, the Affordable Care Act has helped breastfeeding many ways, and we will cover three of these below.

  1. Free breastpumps through insurance. Under the affordable Care Act, mothers are now eligible to receive a free breastpump through their insurance. In the past we have written blogs about the coverage that United Healthcare, Aetna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield provide. If you are with one of those three you should be good to go, but if not, there’s no need to worry. You can very likely still get your free breastpump. To find out for sure, you will probably want to fill out our “Qualify Through Insurance” form.
  2. Lactation Rooms. Another provision of the Affordable Care Act is that businesses will be required to provide a small, private, non bathroom place for mothers to express breast milk. This is made available to encourage new and breastfeeding mothers to continue to work, while still having a place where they can pump their milk.
  3. Nursing Breaks. Along with designated lactation rooms, the ACA has also stated that businesses will allow mothers to have designated breastfeeding breaks so that they can pump their milk without having to worry about being reprimanded for the time that they are pumping.
