Breastfeeding is not as easy as it may look or seem – it can be just as difficult as it is rewarding. Sometimes we face even more difficult issues like breastfeeding with flat or inverted nipples.

Flat nipples do not stand out much from the areola, even when stimulated. Inverted nipples retract, or even can pull inward when stimulated- they may look flat, or slightly/clearly dimpled or indented from the center. Flat nipples commonly cause issues for baby to latch, and inverted nipples even more so. You can check your own nipples if you’re uncertain by gently squeezing the areola (the colored tissue surrounding the nipple) between your thumb and index finger; if the nipple becomes dimpled or clearly indents, it is inverted.

While you can absolutely breastfeeding with flat or inverted nipples, the stress of doing so may increase the occurrence of cracked or painful nipples. The stress is due to vigorous nursing, caused by your child’s inability or difficulty latching. It is a common observation that one breast may be different than the other- whether larger, a little differently shaped, etc. Breasts function independently of one another, and so it is normal for one breast to produce more milk than the other, or for one nipple to be inverted or flat, and the other not.
