Breastfeeding delivers unsurpassed health benefits to your baby, but did you know that breastfeeding is also healthy for mom too?  It’s true, breastfeeding provides health benefits to both mom and baby!  So if you’re wondering how breastfeeding can benefit your own health, consider the content of an online publication by Scientific American.

Breastfeeding Benefits for Mom

This article entitled “How Breastfeeding Benefits Mothers’ Health” emphasizes how the omission of breastfeeding after delivery puts women at higher risk for:

  • breast and ovarian cancer
  • diabetes
  • cardiovascular disease
  • a myriad of other serious health conditions

Noted in the publication is a U.S. study involving 139,681 postmenopausal women.  The study concludes that women who had children but did not breastfeed experienced a 42.1 percent chance of developing hypertension, where those mothers who breastfed for at least one year had only a 38.6 percent chance.  For those women participating in the study that did not have children, their outcomes were more consistent to the women who breastfed.

Interestingly another study cited in the article suggests that women who breastfed longer during their reproductive years are less likely to develop type II diabetes, independent of BMI (Body Mass Index).  Breastfeeding has even been linked to a reduction in type 2 diabetes development in women who experienced gestational diabetes!  This article also states that one in 29 cases of postmenopausal hypertension could be avoided if women breastfed for at least 12 months, and for every 12 months a women breastfeeds the risk of developing breast cancer drops 4.3 percent!

It is believed that the small infections often occurring during breastfeeding known as mastitis might serve to protect the body against tumors later in life through the residual antibodies established.  These antibodies are thought to reduce the likelihood of ovarian cancer in women, which provides just another benefit breastfeeding has on mothers!
