Are you seeking some professional advice where breastfeeding is concerned?  First, remember that milk production is based on supply and demand.  The more you nurse or pump to express breast milk the more milk your body will produce. As easy as this sounds, we realize that it can be quite a challenge when it's put into action! That's why we have gathered some helpful tips that will encourage you to relax and keep pumping.


#1: Reduce stress

Stress can impede your body’s ability to produce breast milk.  Find a quiet place to pump to avoid unnecessary distractions. It may be helpful to massage your breasts or use a warm compress to initiate the process. #2: Pump frequently

The more you pump, the more breast milk you can produce.  A double electric breast pump is a great way to reduce the time you spend pumping as you can express breast milk from both breasts simultaneously.

#3: Nurse baby when together (as much as possible)

A schedule will help your body will be able to produce milk more abundantly when you pump.  You can try feeding more often in the evenings, early mornings, or weekends.  If your schedule is more routine then you may consider asking your baby’s caregiver to avoid feeding your baby during the last hour of care so you can nurse upon arrival.

#4: Avoid formula

This will disrupt your milk production.  Stay consistent with pumping and nursing in order to avoid impeding your body’s ability to produce breast milk.  You can pump extra breast milk after or between feedings then freeze for future consumption.  Having properly stored breastmilk will reduce the likelihood of having to use formula when you’re apart and also continue to maintain your body’s milk producing ability.

#5: Stay hydrated

Drink a lot of  water, juice or milk.  Limit your caffeine intake by avoiding coffee and sodas.  Too much caffeine consumed while breastfeeding can cause your baby to experience irritability or restlessness. If you have an occasional alcoholic beverage you should avoid breastfeeding or pumping for two hours post consumption.

#6: Avoid smoking

This also applies to exposure to secondhand smoke. Smoking will reduce your milk supply and interfere with your child’s sleep.  Secondhand smoke exposure increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) as well as respiratory illness.

#7: Stay healthy

Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  Implement physical activity into your daily routine, sleep when your baby sleeps, and ask for help whenever you need it.  You may also want to consider birth control as breastfeeding is not a reliable form of birth control despite many myths out there.  Oral contraceptives contain estrogen which can complicate milk production.  You may want to consider condoms or other forms of birth control while breastfeeding.
