No two insurance companies are the same or cover benefits in the same way- and every policy administered by these health insurance companies are different. Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) have plans in all 50 states and in the District of Columbia. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wisconsin covers thousands of patients, providing them with the best insurance coverage at the best rates possible! In this post, we will cover the BCBS WI insurance guidelines for breast pumps.
Insurance companies separate their benefits into two categories (and all kinds of subsets past that) - in network and out of network. What does this mean? An in network provider would be a provider that has contacted with your insurance company to provide services to their patients. This means there is a “fee schedule” negotiated between your insurance company and the distributor, which in turn, keeps overall health care costs low. On the other hand, obtaining items through an out of network provider will typically mean the patient responsibility is higher. Sometimes an out of network provider is the best option for emergency situations or specialized care needs.
Per the Affordable Care Act, breast pumps are to be covered as a preventative benefit, which means breastfeeding supplies and equipment should be covered at little to no cost to the consumer. Compliant policies generally only cover the benefit through in-network providers. BCBS WI insurance guidelines for breast pumps are compliant- and Aeroflow Healthcare is a contracted (in network) provider. This means you can utilize Aeroflow Breastpumps to obtain your breast pump for free if you qualify! Aeroflow Breastpumps offers a wide variety of brands and accessories- you can check out their product line at aeroflowmomandbaby.com.
To find out if your policy is compliant, fill out their simple three-step Qualify through Insurance form. A breastpump specialist will contact your insurance company, verify your coverage and network status, and contact you within 3-5 business days with your options.
Having BCBS of WI, and having BCBS and living in WI are two totally different things. You can have BCBS of WI, and live in another state; this does not impact whether or not a company is in or out of network. If a company is contracted with BCBS of WI, regardless of where you live, they are still in-network. Due to certain BCBS WI insurance guidelines for breast pumps, a company may not be able to “bill your local” (which typically only affects BCBS patients that live in DC, ND, and MA for anyone who wishes to utilize Aeroflow Healthcare). If this is the case, your rep will let you know and guide you in the correct direction. This does not mean you aren’t covered for a pump- simply that you must obtain it through a different (likely local) vendor.
