Breastfeeding is one of the greatest gifts that a mother can provide for her baby. From a nutritional standpoint, breastfed babies are healthier and less likely to get ear infections, respiratory infections, or have GI issues.
From a health standpoint, breastfeeding can help a mother lose weight after pregnancy, and also help her baby get on the right track for a healthy life. As amazing as breastfeeding is, mothers do have to be careful about what they consume prior to feeding.
Babies are very tiny and their bodies are more greatly impacted by even small amounts substances. Things that we may take for granted may impact your baby’s meal. A single cup of coffee, or glass of wine may not illicit much of a response in a fully grown adult, but it is absorbed by your body and delivered into your breast milk which your baby will consume.
Alcohol. Most mothers are aware of this, and it may seem like a no brainer, but drinking alcohol while breastfeeding or shortly before is a definite no. That isn’t to say if you’ve had a drink that you cannot breastfeed. Just try and give yourself 2 hours per drink to let it fully metabolize.
Caffeine. Caffeine is another substance that may be detrimental to your baby. Like in fully grown adults, the caffeine in coffee, tea, chocolate and soda, will act as a stimulant for your baby. But like we had mentioned earlier, because your baby’s body is very small, it will be enhanced even by small amounts which can cause restlessness, and lack of sleep for your baby. We suggest pumping or feeding before your morning cup of coffee, or waiting until your caffeine boost wears off before feeding.
Fish. Like when you were pregnant, be careful about some types of fish prior to breastfeeding because of mercury levels. Though this one is less likely to cause issues as the previous two, just be careful when eating a can or two of tuna before feeding your baby.
Using a breastpump may be beneficial in many of these instances. This way, you can pump and store milk so that your baby always has a readily available supply of milk and you can enjoy a cup of coffee, or glass of wine without having to worry about whether or not that will affect your baby.
