Edema is a term used for normal swelling of the hands, feet and face during pregnancy. Swelling during pregnancy occurs due to water retention; water is retained to soften the body in preparation for expansion (to make room for your new baby!). This water retention can also soften your joints and pelvis in preparation for child birth. Your body will produce 50% more blood and body fluids during gestation to accommodate the needs of your growing child. Swelling can occur at any and all points throughout pregnancy, but is accentuated during the fifth month and third trimester.
How do you know when the swelling is abnormal, or how can you decrease swelling during pregnancy once it becomes uncomfortable for you?
A few warning signs of something more than usual edema are:
These can be signs of blood clot, preeclampsia or heart troubles which are all serious issues- if you are experiencing any of these issues, contact your health care provider immediately.
A few cures for swelling during pregnancy include resting with your feet above your hips, avoiding crossing your legs (which restricts your blood flow), and if you must stand for long periods of time during the day, try switching your weight frequently from one foot to the other to keep your blood flowing evenly. Aromatherapy, herbal remedies, osteopathy, and reflexology can also aid in curing pregnancy swelling.
Your breasts will also seem to swell, but this is not due to Water retention or edema- this is due to your milk ducts producing colostrum and preparing to make milk for baby. This is the best nutrition your child can get, and is natural and free!
