While it should be obvious that breastfeeding a baby is one of the best approaches to raising a healthy, happy child, some US women still need a little encouragement. In anticipation of Kate Middleton going into labor and the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first baby, we thought we’d take a look at a few other celebrity moms who have taken up the crusade to increase breastfeeding awareness and reduce any stigma associated with the healthy, natural practice.
In a 2012 interview with People Magazine, pop-culture superstar, Beyonce Carter-Knowles acknowledges, “I lost most of my weight from breastfeeding and I encourage women to do it; it’s just so good for the baby and good for yourself.”
Not to be outdone, Victoria Secret Model, Miranda Kerr, echoed Beyonce’s sentiments when she stated, “My breast milk will give our little Flynn the nutrition he needs for his continued healthy development and to all mums out there I am sure you will make the right choice for you and your baby.”
After Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a conservative pundit for The View, gave birth to her third child in the summer of 2009, she used her television position to discuss continuing breastfeeding while she was getting back to work and the device which helped her do this: a breast pump.
In fact, busy celebrity moms everywhere are advocating the use of breastpumps. MTV’s Jersey Shore starlet, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, has also expressed her love for breast pumps by recently tweeting, “#BreastPump insteada #FistPump.”
Just the fact that it is a subject that can now be discussed openly is good news for both moms and babies. The topic, once considered awkward in society, has even been discussed humorously on national television. Actress Naomi Watts joked on David Letterman, “I’m busy milking all day long. I feel like I have probably lost a good 75 percent of my brain power. I say it halved itself and it halved itself again. It’s not just the sleep deprivation, it is the breastfeeding and I call it the ‘lactose lobotomy.”
This new perspective on breastfeeding fueled by celebrity moms, has helped inspire and encourage other moms around the country to do what is best for the health of their children: breastfeed.
