World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually from August 1st through August 7th in more than 120 countries. This week commemorates the Innocenti Declaration made by the World Health Organization (WHO) and The United National Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991 to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. According to Time magazine, each year the week is organized around a theme. This year’s theme is “Breastfeeding and Work: Let’s make it work”. This theme was created to help promote the implementation of policies that will make breastfeeding more convenient in the workplace—whether that be in a formal or home setting. The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) states the 2015 world breastfeeding campaign calls for the structuring of maternity and protection laws and regulations, inclusion of breastfeeding indicators in the sustainable development goals, and to promote support for women who are breastfeeding at work.  A lot of progress has been made since the 1990 Innocenti Declaration regarding maternity entitlements and protection but globally there are still laws and practices that need to be improved upon. Guy Ryder, the director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) commented that, “Globally more than 800 million women workers, or 41%, still don’t have adequate maternity protection, and take-up rates among men of parental leave are low.” Aeroflow Healthcare Breastpumps is proud to participate in the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week.
