It’s common for mommies-to-be, or moms who are currently nursing, to look into foods that can help increase lactation- but sometimes, it can get difficult to incorporate these foods into your meals. There are many different ways to get these foods into your diet in a great tasting way!

Lactation cookie recipe

A super popular food for increasing milk production is lactation cookies. You will need:

  • Flax seed meal
  • Water
  • Butter
  • White sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Brewers yeast
  • Wheat germ
  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar
  • Old-fashioned oats
  • Chocolate chips
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • All purpose flour

This exact recipe can be found here and only takes about 25 minutes to prepare. The recipe is actually pretty healthy, especially in comparison to normal cookies, so you can share it with the whole family!

Lactation Smoothie

A smoothie is definitely a lighter option to the usual baked goods, and can make you feel amazing. What you need:

  • A blender
  • Milk
  • Oats
  • Brewers yeast
  • Flaxseed
  • Banana
  • Yogurt (I recommend Greek)
  • Strawberries
  • Any other fruit or veggie you like!

A great recipe including measurements can be found here. Feel free to also eyeball your measurements and add in lots of yummy fruits and kale for added nutrition.

Chocolate Chip banana lactation muffins

This is an awesome recipe, and goes great with breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack or dessert! All you need to make 12-15 muffins is:

  • 3-4 very ripe bananas
  • 1/3 cup of butter, very soft or melted
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 tsp of vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats
  • 2 Tbsp. Brewer’s Yeast
  • 2 Tbsp. Flax Seed
  • 1 cup of chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of chopped nuts of your choice (optional)

These take a little longer to bake than the cookies (around 25-30 minutes, find specific instructions and more recipes here). Another awesome resource for ideas for lactation foods can be found on Café Mom.

Try power pumping

If you aren’t seeing the desired results from eating lactation foods, you could try “power pumping” which is where you will breast pump for an hour- ten minutes on, and ten minutes off. This can increase your milk supply, but can be exhausting if you don’t have a bustier or hands-free accessory set. Both of these items can be found at a great price through Aeroflow Breastpumps’ online store.

Use a breast pump

Your breast pump, if you do not already have one, may be covered at little-to-no cost to you through your health insurance.
