Breastfeeding is an amazing way to bond with your new addition; this doesn’t have to be a bonding experience that cannot be shared with your partner, too. There are many ways your spouse can support breastfeeding and gain an amazing bonding experience with mommy and baby.
Some fathers may feel a little inadequate during the first few months of breastfeeding, as they cannot physically contribute milk to their child or may feel as though they cannot help mom produce milk for their baby. We all know that breast milk is what is best for your child- and there are so many things men and other partners can do to support their breast feeding other half.
Partners can be supportive and thoughtful, by taking on a few extra chores around the house to lighten mommy’s load. Try bottle feeding with breast milk, and get as much skin-to-skin contact with baby as possible. Spending as much time around your baby as possible is always a great way to bond as well.
The single most important factor in a new mom’s success with breastfeeding is the support she gets from her family and loved ones. Encourage her, try to make her comfortable. Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t make it easy! Latching and positioning, sore nipples, tired arms… breast milk production causes women to burn from 500-800 extra calories a day.
Offer her as much emotional support as you can through the rough times, and continue to show support once it gets easy! This may help mom not to give up when things get tough.
Let her know that it is okay to pump. Human breast milk is the standard form of nutrition for human babies and any way this can get from mother to baby is fine! If she is having a hard time establishing milk supply, or if baby has an issue latching, or for whatever other reason pumping may be the best option- support it, too.
Breast pumps can be extremely pricey, but Aeroflow offers a wide variety of brands and products at competitive pricing. Most health insurance companies are also now covering breast pumps at little-to-no cost to patients.
