Throughout modern American History, the percentage of mothers who choose to breastfeed has varied greatly from decade to decade. Scientific researching in recent years has further validated the positive health benefits of breast milk for babies. Because of this, breastfeeding rates have skyrocketed in the United States. However this wasn’t always the case. Breastfeeding trends have varied greatly in the last 40 years and continue to fluctuate.
In 1972, only 22% of all mothers in the United States were breastfeeding. This was a record low in breast feeding rates in the 20th century. That is substantially different from today where we are experiencing a breast feeding revolution. According to the CDC in 2013, 77% of mothers chose to breast feed. This was 10% increase from 2000 where 70% of mothers were breastfeeding.
From the 1970s through the 1990s more and more mothers began to breastfeed and breastfeeding trends began to skyrocket. A decade later in the 1980s, 62% of all mothers were breastfeeding, but again, that trend began to decline and just half of all mothers were breastfeeding by 1990.
Along with the health benefits, breastfeeding is now easier than ever thanks to the affordable care act. Under provisions written into the ACA Health Insurance Companies must provide breast feeding support. Now, the extent to which they provide this support is dependent upon the insurance companies themselves, and your particular plan.
However, you should be able to get a free breast pump through insurance under most plans. If you are looking for one, Aeroflow can help you out. You can fill out our quality through insurance form, which is located, here. It only takes three minutes to complete and it can help us determine what your plan covers and what the best breast feeding options for you are.
