April 22, 2015
Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 by United States Senator of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson. The observance of Earth Day has subsequently continued on every 22 day of April post the inception in 1970. However, many choose to pay homage to environmental awareness throughout the entire month of April. Acknowledging Earth Day can be done by changing a behavior to support a cleaner environment through activities such as participating in a community garden or by participating in a breast pump recycling program.
Global participation is encouraged and any act, big or small, can have an impact on preservation. Many organizations have initiated eco-friendly programs as part of their business practice to support a healthy environment. Breast pump recycling programs are offered by manufacturers such as Hygeia and Medela. Hygeia and Medela’s ongoing initiatives are specific to breast pumps in an effort to reduce overall waste.
Hygeia’s motto of No Pumps in Dumps is geared toward reusing breast pumps through its closed system technology. A closed system breast pump means that breast milk never comes into contact with the pump motor and is therefore considered to be safe for multiple users. The personal accessory kit (PAS) is replaced, but the pump is not intended to be discarded. Hygeia encourages women no longer needing breast milk expression via pumping to give their breast pump to a friend or simply send it back to Hygeia for sound ecological recycling.
Medela Recycles is another program that provides moms who have completed their breastfeeding journey the opportunity to support families in crisis. Each pump Medela receives supports the donation of a new hospital-grade multi-use breast pump to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
